What is IVF?

All you need to know about IVF

  • In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a fertility programme providing medical assistance and expertise. IVF offers hope to couples facing challenges in conceiving naturally. By combining an egg and sperm outside the body in a laboratory, IVF maximises your chances of successful fertilisation and pregnancy.

  • Firstly, the woman's ovaries are stimulated by daily injections of hormones that mimic the natural hormone called "Follicle-Stimulating Hormone" (FSH). This phase typically lasts from 8 to 12 days. These eggs are then retrieved through a minor surgical procedure. On the same day, the male partner provides a semen sample, which is processed to obtain fresh and best possible sperm. Fertilisation occurs in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are then cultured for a period of 2, 3 or 5 days, depending on the specific procedures followed by the laboratory, before being transferred to the woman's uterus. After a two-week wait, a pregnancy test determines the outcome. The cycle takes about 6 to 8 weeks and may need to be repeated.

  • It is important to mentally, emotionally, and physically prepare well for this journey. The mind-body connection plays a crucial role in easing the experience of the procedures. Practising mindfulness, breathing techniques, and visualisation are some of the helpful tools to feel grounded and well-prepared.

Throughout the process, maintaining a positive mindset, engaging in self-care activities and seeking support from loved ones can also contribute to a smoother journey. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and seeking guidance from your doctor and fertility team can provide valuable support along the way.
